Éliane Radigue made music that moves the way breathing moves. She began in the 1950s at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris, under Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, splicing tape by hand. From 1970 her instrument was the ARP 2500 synthesiser, and with it she made long, slow works in which a single tone opens, turns and changes over an hour, so gradually that the change is felt before it is heard.
In 1975 she became a practising Tibetan Buddhist, and from then on her music and her practice were one thing. The Trilogie de la Mort, made between 1988 and 1993, is her largest work. Kyema follows the six intermediate states of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Kailasha is a circuit of the sacred mountain. Koumé is the rebirth. The trilogy was made in the years around the death of her son, and it carries that.
From 2001 she set the synthesiser aside and wrote only for acoustic players, by voice and by ear, never on paper. The OCCAM Ocean pieces, made with musicians one at a time, occupied her last two decades. She died in Paris in February 2026, aged 94.
murmurs is a free visualiser. It is non-commercial, and it will stay that way. It was built to give people a new way of seeing sound, and it was built around the Trilogie de la Mort because that music helped its maker through anxiety, post-traumatic stress and the daily work of staying well. It is offered as a tribute to Éliane Radigue and as a door, so that new listeners might find this extraordinary composition.
We have written to her estate to ask permission to carry the Trilogie here, and to XI Records, who released the recording, about the master. The donate button below points to Les Femmes s'en Mêlent, the Paris association for women in independent and electronic music. That choice belongs to her estate: we will point it at any cause she would have wanted.
